I'm vegitarian and have been for over 15 years now. I also have natural strawberry blond hair past my butt, and haven't had it even trimmed in nearly a decade, with only a small amount of split ends.

Here's the secret: The commericials for shampoo show the models with thier hair piled on top of thier heads with luxurious suds. Don't do that. That's just to make the shampoo look good. ONLY wash your hair down to the tops of your ears. That's as far as the oil can travel anyways. The rest of it will be cleaned when it rinses out and down. Then, condition from the ears down, or really, from the bottom up. That's where it actually needs it, since the oil from your head can't reach. If you really want a treat, spread an edible oil from your ends up, like grapeseed or olive. It totally soaks in and strengthens hair. It's a ancient folk treatment, and what the 'hot oil' craze was based on, even though the pharmacetical companies used mineral oil, which doesn't in fact soak in.... You have to wash it out with two shampooings, but you don't need conditioner after...

Hair grows, but it isn't a living thing. It can't heal or recover, so you must do you best to ensure that it doesn't damage in the first place. Nothing, not even expensive conditioners that claim they can repair, can do it. They only try to glue the ends with sticky stuff.

Nearly all shampoos and conditioners made by pharmceticual companies are the same. Conditioner or cream rinse was orginally just the emulisified version of the oil treatment, but now it's all mineral oils and chemicals. Check the ingredients. If they don't have them listed, don't even buy it. SLS, for example, is a potent carcinagen that only increases suds, not cleaning power. I never use anything from them. I get all my hair products from the local health food stores. The prices are comparable, and the results are far superior.

Since hair isn't alive but grown, injesting vit, minerals and protiens are really the only way to get to the root of the problem, as it were... Aquaous extract of horsetail for silica, biotin, keratin, vit. E, kelp, B-complex, and lecithin aid in growth, strength, shine, elasticity, and thickness. Get a nice high dose with no preservatives, sugar, or starch from a health food store.

And shoot your curling irons, hair dryers, and hair sprays.

I used to have dry hair and my hairdresser told me the best thing for it is salon quality shampoo and conditioner. It's expensive, but it's worth it.

try a hot treatment by using African herbal oil. It's very cheap and has so many herbs including walnut oil, olive, kiwi, etc. U can find it in dollar stores and just heat the oil and rub into ur hair and scalp and put a towel over ur head for 10 mins. And trim the ends of ur hair for the split ends, and buy some good shampooand conditioner like Pantene. This is for all races actually and so cheap and u can put it in ur bath water also. Multi-uses.
